Gold painted patterns on silk fabric has a long history of around 1,300 years. One of the finest example of silk sashes in the collection of the Shosoin Repository has birds painted in gold similar to the ones on this bag! Of course these these birds are painted with more precision and in much better condition than the silk sash artefact.
