Serpentine is also known as Xiu Yu 岫玉 (lit: “Jade” from the cave region) in Chinese, as the region that produced it in abundance has a lot of cave formations along its coasts.

葡萄美酒夜光杯，欲饮琵琶马上催。(lit: The jade cup glows as the grape wine pours at night. Ready to drink but summoned by the lute on steed I climb). This is an extract from the poem “Liang Zhou” by the Tang poet Wang Han. It encapsulates the cosmopolitan trade and culture embraced by the Tang dynasty Chinese. The grapes were often imported to western China from Turfan (modern day Xinjiang region).
