[Dual Side] That Colourful Waves of Art Deco
Original price was: $228.00.$168.00Current price is: $168.00.
Repurposed from pure silk kimono textile weaved in damask patterns of seigaiha (wave) style. The wave style is an extension of the type of pattern that has been in use by traditional Japanese artists for over a century. This style also became very popular in the Art Deco movement in the West sometime in the 1930s.
Damakss are self-patterned textiles woven in one colour. The pattern motifs are thrown into relief by the way light falls on the fabric and is reflected differently by the lustrous fibres of areas of pattern and ground. The effect is subtle, shimmering and glamorous, especially when it is done with silk. This piece has a beautiful, subtle gradient of green and orangy-yellow.
The bag is double-sided with the same fabric and is sold at a slight discount due to the minor scratches on the metal casing during the making of the bag as it is handmade, so the metal casing was slightly scratched in the process while inserting the cured textile.
Significant reduction in price due to slight blemish on the metal frame.

In 1903, Mori Yuzan, a little-known Japanese artist from Kyoto, created a design work comprised of three volumes and entitled Hamonshu. It presents various traditional Japanese wave designs that could be used by local artisans to adorn swords, ceramics, and other decorative and religious objects.
You can see the resemblance between the patterns recorded over a century ago and the Art Deco fan shape design:
