The Sari Mamian series is an exploration of a centuries-old conversation woven in gold.
During the Ming dynasty, the mamian skirt (马面裙) was one of the most beloved garments in a woman’s wardrobe. Woven gold mamian skirts were especially prized for ceremonial and formal occasions, reflecting both extraordinary craftsmanship and the cosmopolitan tastes of the era.
At the same time, luxury textiles travelled widely across Asia. Indian fabrics were highly sought after in Ming China, while techniques of weaving with gold thread had long connected Persia, India and China through networks of trade, craft and cultural exchange.
This collection reimagines that shared textile history for the contemporary wardrobe. Each skirt is handcrafted from carefully selected saris—ranging from pure silk with zari to silk blends, cotton blends and other textiles—transforming them into a modern mamian silhouette. Functional pockets and leather fastening details, subtly reminiscent of the contemporary kilt, bring historical inspiration into everyday wear.
Every piece is made to order and one of a kind. Rather than recreating historical dress, the Sari Mamian continues the long tradition of cultural exchange, celebrating craftsmanship through a modern, cosmopolitan lens.
