Description
This is a very rare piece of bangle because of its material—a mix between serpentine (the green part and possibly the somewhat translucent part on the white) with marble (the opaque white parts). I sent it to the lab for a verbal evaluation, as even the original seller of the bangle did not know what it was made of except serpentine jade! Because marble is softer on the moh’s scale, it is a delicate piece and suitable for wearing for occasions but not everyday as it would be prone to chipping. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful piece of jade carving art.
The carving is done by a very skilled craftsman, especially with the three dimensional dragon scales known as “exploding scales”. It requires a craftsman of many years of experience to execute this dragon well.
While the idea of Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon is that of danger, I subverted the name of this piece to present a dragon that is like Haku from Spirited Away—A gentle and helpful dragon. And its colours resembles Haku quite a lot.
In addition, the dragon’s base form was that of a snake, and it is quite apt that it is carved from a piece of serpentine, going back to its origin.
