The requirement for totemic carving is much higher than the three dimensional ones due to the need for symmetry and precision. Most of the carvers in the market would user laser machine for the carving with slight touchup by hand. This piece is carve entirely by hand to pay tribute to the ingenuity and brilliant craftsmanship of the ancient world.

The Taotie totem was first found on jade items from the neolithic period and passed on to the Bronze Age where it is famously known for gracing the surface of many important ceremonial bronze wares. The Taotie is a mythical beast that is said to devour everything in its way, and was considered one of the four evil creatures of the ancient Chinese world in contrast to the four guardians.

I like its badassness, and its zoomorphic look, and thought it would make a cool ring that can be worn by men as well. It would be on the smaller side for men, so perhaps a pinkie ring? For women, it could well be a thumb ring as well.

The ring has a dark black tone to it when worn, but beautiful green when held against the light. Its ink-jade like quality is one of the mesmerising one the green peeks through the light when worn, and the Chinese adored this particularity/mystical quality. I will have other jadeite and nephrite pieces that are truly ink-jade (pure black when seen upfront, and brilliant green when shining through), but meanwhile this would be really cool one to have.
